8th April 2009

The penultimate Harris Inter County Final was held at Grantham Squash Club, Lincolnshire on the weekend of 4-5 April. Alison Henley reports. "Grantham Club is an ideal venue, boasting 6 well maintained courts with excellent viewing. A spacious and comfortable lounge and a snooker room enhanced the weekend – as did an Abba Tribute band!
Avon Calling
Avon was aiming for a hat trick of titles and got off to a good start as they beat Oxfordshire 2-1 in the first semi final. Lancashire joined Avon in the final as they also posted a 2-1 score line versus Surrey
Oxfordshire secured 3rd place, as impressive no 1 string Pam Eagles lead them to a 3-0 victory against Surrey.
Teams of three rely on a good start, and 3rd string Jan Ellis set the ball rolling for Avon in the final with a tactically astute win against Lancashire’s Liz Edge. Victories for Jet O’Neill and Helen Gould against Sue Meadows and Debbie Catlow completed a 3-0 triumph and a 3rd successive win for the West Country team.
RACKETBALL - The Wright Stuff
This is the 2nd season for Racketball in the Harris Inter County Championships, and the event is growing in status.
In the morning semi Kent, a county steeped in Racketball due to the influence of the late Ian Wright met another “racketball” county Warwickshire. The match was predictably close and at 2-2 all was still to play for. At 2 love up the experienced Cerryg Jones looked like sending Warwickshire through, but Adam Young upped the pace and ran out a 3-2 winner 11-7 in the fifth.
A well balanced Yorkshire team ousted a weakened Sussex side 4-1. Tim Vail recording the only victory for the southerners.
Warwickshire saw off Sussex 4-1 in the Sunday play off match – Andy Warmington and Guy Pearson maintaining their 100% records.
Kent went 2 up in the final with a 3-1 for Scott Sumner and a close 3-2 for Matt Badger. Dave Hymas kept Yorkshire in the hunt, but captain Sam Stabler gave Kent an unbeatable lead taking his Yorkshire counterpart Neil Guirey 3-1. Dominic Hamilton gave Yorkshire a win in the dead rubber match v Adam Young.
So 3-2 to Kent in a victory inspired by and movingly dedicated to Ian Wright. "
